eBay Motors

THE PROBLEM:

Buying and selling classic and rare cars is different than the typical e-Commerce transaction, and eBay sought to re-envision the experience for motor enthusiasts. In order to build a new mobile app for peer-to-peer transactions, we worked with the product and engineering team to first understand the unique challenges of this domain, then to iteratively build the experience from the wheels up.

The Challenge

Motors are eBay’s largest vertical category, but the experience had been neglected over the past decade. Working with internal stakeholders and a community of motor enthusiasts, we first sought to understand the particular user needs for searching, buying, vetting, and selling. In a collaborative, agile process, we developed iterations of the product design, and worked side-by-side with a cross-platform team of developers building the app using the Flutter development kit.

THE APPROACH

For each sprint, we focused on designing, building, and testing a feature or component, and worked in parallel to analyze, glean, and iterate on our findings. Focusing on both easy-win solutions and long-term improvements, we found opportunities to integrate emerging technologies in ways that made sense to our users. Further, over the course of our time working on the project, we developed and shared a deeper set of insights and spectrum of enthusiast personas to build understanding throughout the organization.
